| Calvin, a 29-year-old novelist, must attend a reception to note the tenth anniversary of the successful publication of his first - and so far his only - book. He has been unable to find success since then, and has become moody and depressed. He cannot finish his second novel and has isolated himself from the world, becoming unpleasant and undesirable; only his brother Harry will accept his company. Calvin's life suddenly changes when he wakes from a dream in which he encounters an attractive girl in a park. The dream inspires him to begin another story, about the girl - whom he dubs Ruby Sparks. As he creates the girl on the pages of his manuscript, he realizes that he is falling in love with his creation. Calvin begins to suspect that his story is becoming reality. He discovers a lady's razor in his bathroom; he finds lady's underthings in the apartment; then one day, there she is in his apartment, acting as though they have been together for some time. Calvin determines that he is not simply hallucinating, by confirming that the other people in the neighborhood can also see the girl, so he introduces her to his family and settles into what promises to be a perfect companionship. To keep from spoiling the dream, he stops writing - however, he "tweaks" the plot occasionally, in order to assure a happy outcome. But his misguided efforts only introduce problems. Calvin now realizes that the girl is not an independent person, but is literally his creation. "She’s his puppet, and she has no idea who’s pulling the strings."
